GIRLS SOCCER: Rochester blanks Lake Orion
ROCHESTER HILLS — Three weeks ago, Rochester’s Jenny Goethals tripped over the ball while trying to slow down in a game against Rochester Stoney Creek.
The result was a sprained ankle which kept her from seven games as well as the championship season of the track and field season, including the league, regional, Oakland County and state meets.
With the Saginaw Valley State-bound senior midfielder back in uniform Tuesday night, her return helped spark a 2-0 shutout of visiting Lake Orion in a Division 1 pre-district contest.
Goethals finished the night with a goal and an assist for Rochester.
Gemma Najar scored the game-winner in the 60th minute of the second half and Goethals added an insurance goal later in the half.
It marked the second time that Rochester defeated Lake Orion by a 2-0 score this season.
Stephanie Heber made five saves for Rochester (15-2-4).
Lauryn Auspitz had 10 saves for Lake Orion.
Rochester will face Oxford at 7 p.m. Thursday in the district semifinals at Rochester.
