GIRLS BASKETBALL: Holly wins first district since ‘93
LINDEN — Trailing 41-39 entering the fourth quarter, Holly found a little magic in its bag of tricks to continue its perfect season Friday night.
The Bronchos closed out with an 18-6 run to topple Fenton, 57-47, in a Class A girls basketball district final at Linden.
The win gave Holly its first district title since the fall 1993 season, some 20.5 years without a title. It moved the Bronchos’ record to a perfect 22-0 on the year and vaults them into next Tuesday’s regional semifinals.
Holly built a 28-27 lead at the half, only to see the host Tigers use a 14-11 third quarter run to take a two-point lead into the final frame.
Senior Allyssa Copley, headed for Cleveland State, led Holly with a game-high 22 points, 10 rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Kaitlyn Smith added 17 points and Jenna Pepper had nine points for the Bronchos, who finished the night a crisp 21-for-25 from the foul line.
Katie Conroy scored 16 and Sarah Cummings added 123 points for Fenton.
