THURSDAY’S PREP ROUNDUP: Young’s heroics lift Troy past Oak Park in overtime; Seaholm edges Stoney Creek, North Farmington tips Pontiac in OT
TROY — James young was back it again Thursday night.
The junior guard form Troy converted a three-points play with 16 seconds left in overtime, then made the game-clinching steal inside 10 seconds in overtime to help lift the Colts to a 68-65, OAA white Division boys basketball victory over Oak Park.
The win kept Troy (13-5, 7-1) in a first-place tie with Ferndale with one week to go in the regular season.
The Colts outscored Oak Park 7-4 in the extra session, but not before a wild four quarters.
Oak Park led 12-10 after the first quarter, only to see Troy get untracked with a 34-19 second quarter for a 44-31 lead at the half.
Oak Park used a16-8 third quarter and 16-7 fourth stanza to force overtime tied at 61-61.
Young finished with 30 points, including 12-for-15 from the foul line, to go along with 18 rebounds and five steals for Troy. Joe Leonard added19 points and Danny Wunderlich chipped in with six points for the Colts.
Ken Lockhart scored 19 and Juwan Perkins added 17 points for Oak Park (6-12, 3-5).
BIRMINGHAM SEAHOLM 50, ROCHESTER STONEY CREEK 39: Paris Bass scored a game-high21 points in leading Seaholm past winless Stoney Creek in this OAA Blue Division contest.
Brett Houghton added nine points for the Maples (11-7, 4-4).
Stephen Makowski scored seven and Greg Binder and Patrick Mertz added six points apiece for Stoney Creek (0-18, 0-8).
NORTH FARMINGTON 73, PONTIAC 70 (OT): North Farmington outscored Pontiac 7-4 in overtime to post this OA Red Division triumph.
Dorrell Foster pumped in a game-high 33 points to pace the Raiders, who trailed 34-28 at the half. North Farmington outscored Pontiac 38-32 in the second half.
CalebHoggans added 13 points, Sterling Sharp had 12 points and the Raiders’ David Lett was the fourth player to reach double figures with 11 points for North Farmington (13-6, 8-3).
Dijon Cogdell scored 17 to lead Pontiac. Jemarea Samples added 12 points and Jarod Jones finished with 10 points for the Phoenix (12-7, 6-5), who held a 23-14 edge in the fourth quarter.
FERNDALE 70, AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE 61: Ferndale built a 19-9 lead by the end of the first quarter and maintained the lead on the Yellowjackets in OAA White Division play.
Four Ferndale players scored in double figures, led by Nate Stepney (19 points), Jermaine King (16 points), Robert Diaz (13 points) and Jordan Ellis (10 points), which finished a dismal 10-fo0r28 from the foul line.
Ferndale led 31-21 at the half and 56-36 through three quarters of play.
Jabbar Mims scored 16, while Darrick Sturgis added 12 points and Brandon Golden added 11 points for Avondale, which finished 15-for-28 from the charity stripe which hurt its upset chances.
TROY BETHANY CHRISTIAN 55, ADRIAN BEREAN BAPTIST 40: Daniel Sprankle scored 15, Mark Bishop added 12 points and Ryan Woodman scored 11 as the Bruins wrapped up the non-league portion of their regular season schedule with this 55-point home win over the Bobcats.
Ryan Helinski scored a game-high 17 points, and Jeff Jordan finished with 16 points for Berean Baptist.
Troy Bethany Christian will face Rochester Hills Christian in the Michigan Association of Christian Schools Division I state tournament Friday night at Clarkston Springfield Christian 7 p.m., while Berean will play host Springfield Christian at 8:30 p.m. in a MACS Division II game.
With the loss, the Bobcats fell to 16-10 on the season. The Bobcats next game will be in the quarterfinals of the MACS Tournament on Friday against Springfield Christian.
