MONDAY’S BOYS BASKETBALL DISTRICT ROUNDUP: Lake Orion eliminates Stoney Creek; Foley knocks out Oakland Christian
ROCHESTER HILLS — Upsets often occur on the first night of the postseason.
Teams with less-than-stellar regular seasons are given new life during the district week.
Rochester Stoney Creek was hoping to be one of those teams. With no realistic chance at a district trophy, the Cougars would love nothing more than to bump off one team who is eyeing a tournament run.
Lake Orion had other plans.
The Dragons, with the largest front line in the OAA, dominated the Cougars from the get-go, outscoring the cougars in each of the first three quarters for a 52-38 victory in a Class A pre-district contest at Rochester Adams.
Lake Orion led 9-4 after the first quarter and26-15 at the half. The Dragons continued to push with a 15-11 surge in the third quarter, good for a 41-26 lead entering the final frame.
Chaz Miller scored 15, John McCarty added 10 points and Brad Watterworth added nine points for the Dragons (14-7).
Charlie Carson had 11 points, Greg binder scored 10 and Stephan Makowski chipped in with nine points for Stoney Creek.
MADISON HEIGHTS BISHOP FOLEY 49, AUBURN HILLS OAKLAND CHRISTIAN 34: Welcome to Class C, Oakland Christian.
The Lancers, Class D powerhouse for most of the past two-plus decades in multiple long tournament runs, including last year’s regional finals appearance, saw their season come to an end by the host Ventures.
Max Aleshire scored 16, Corey Green added 13 points and Michael Oravetz chipped in with 10 points for Bishop Foley (18-3).
Oakland Christian led 4-2 after the first quarter only to see Bishop Foley go on a 23-7 run in the second quarter to take command for good.
Oakland Christian (15-6) had just four players reach the scoring column. Drew Perrin and Charles Hayden both scored 12 and Josh Peterson twined eight points for the Oakland Christian.
CLARKSTON 72, GRAND BLANC 61: Clarkston passed the first test in its Class A district opener at Swartz Creek, topping the Bobcats by 11 points.
Clarkston moved to 19-2 and will face Holly Wednesday in the second round.
CLARKSTON EVEREST COLLEGIATE 54, NEW HAVEN MERRITT ACADEMY 37: Everest Collegiate landed three players in double figures in the 17-point victory Monday at home in a Class D pre-district contest.
Blake Beauchamp and Donald Allen both led the Mountaineers with 13 points David Smith scored 10 and Richie Cross chipped in with eight points for Everest (15-6).
Andrew Smith scored 14 for Merritt Academy (16-5).
Everest outscored Merritt in all four quarters, taking a 12-10 lead after the first quarter and a 27-15 advantage at the half.
The Mountaineers outscored Merritt 27-22 in the second half.
