FRIDAY’S FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Dragons scorch West Bloomfield; Athens rolls over Royal Oak

WEST BLOOMFIELD — It was a breakout party for Jeremy King Friday night.

The junior from Lake Orion had a career day in leading Lake Orion to its third straight win, this time a 42-14 OAA Red Division victory over host West Bloomfield.

King has a rushing touchdown, tow receiving touchdowns and kicked seven extra points in helping the Dragons remain at the top of the league standings. King scored on a 5-yard run and hauled in touchdown passes of 44 and 18 yards for Lake Orion (3-1, 3-0).

Sean Charette finished 9-for-11 for 174 yards and both touchdown passes.

Zach Arnold added 84 yards on seven carries, Jacob Miller picked up 56 yards on 11 carries and Mike Upshaw chipped in with 42 yards on 10 rushes. Miller scored on runs of 1 and 2 yards and Upshaw added a 2-yard run for the Dragons, who led comfortably, 35-0, at the half.

West Bloomfield is 1-3 overall and 1-2 in league play.

TROY ATHENS 56, ROYAL OAK 0: Athens raced out to a 28-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and held a commanding 49-0 lead at the half in recording this lopsided OAA Red Division victory Friday over the visiting Ravens.

Lonnie Bolden scored three times, racing in from 37 and 41 yards, and added an interception 25 yards for another score to help the Red Hawks (3-1, 2-1) bounce back from a Week 3 loss to Clarkston.

Matt Fitpatrick added a 28-yard fumble recovery, Sam Haskell scored on a 87-yard run, Ben Bartnowak added a 5-yard scoring run, James Oltmann scored from 37 yards out and Joe Shields sprinted 87 yards for the final score for Athens.

The Red Hawks picked up 387 yards on the ground, with Shields, Bolden and Haskell all running for more than 80 yards. No ball carrier had more than three carries on the night for Athens.

Sandy Mouch nailed seven extra points.

Andre Mitchell had six tackles to pace the Red Hawks defensive unit. Shields, Ivan Kharchenko, Aaron Hazen and Bolden all had five tackles. Shields, Bolden and Brandon Neal all added interceptions for Athens.

ROCHESTER ADAMS 23, OAK PARK 13: Oak Park had the early lead, but Adams had the late laugh in recording the OAA White Division road triumph.

Adams outscored the Knights 14-6 in the second quarter to take a 14-13 lead at the half. The Highlanders (4-0, 3-0) tacked on six more points in the third period and three more points in the final stanza

Denzel Wright scored on runs of 5 and 6 yards for Oak Park (1-3, 1-2).

Tony Annese collected scoring runs of 10 and 11 yards, respectively, and David Jagow’s 4-yard scamper in the second quarter put Adams up for good. Ryan Ciesel hit a pair of extra points and also booted a 23-yard field goal.

Annese finished with 195 yards on the ground, passed for 100 more yards and had an interception for Adams.

SOUTHFIELD 47, ROCHESTER STONEY CREEK 17: Southfield scored the first three touchdowns and built a commanding 33-7 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back in recording the OAA White Division victory.

Southfield, which at one time led 40-7 in the second quarter, picked up three rushing touchdowns  from Brandon Watkins and Justin Danzy passed for two more for the Blue Jays (3-1, 2-1). Brandon Bean (8 yards) and Brett Knight (37 yards) had touchdown catches, while Watkins scored on runs of 25, 4 and 60 yards for Southfield. Danzy added a 26-yard run for the Bluejays and also converted four extra points.

Sean Cobb scored on runs of 6 and 31 yards and Alex Schnurr added a 17-yard field goal for Stoney Creek (1-3, 0-3), which dropped its third straight contest.

PONTIAC 48, ROCHESTER 16: Kezlow Smith had more than 280 yards of total offense as the host Phoenix took advantage of short-handed Rochester and rolled to this convincing OAA Red Division victory.

Smith collected 180 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns and hauled in 100 receiving yards for Pontiac (2-2, 1-2). Jaffrey Johnson added a rushing touchdown and Ronnie Craft-Bush returned an interception 30 yards for another score for the Phoenix.\

James Ward had a rushing touchdown for Rochester (1-3, 0-3), which also recorded a third-quarter safety.

FERNDALE 23, AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE 22: Michael Johnson scored on a 2-yard run but the ensuing two-point conversion run was stopped, lifting Ferndale to the dramatic one-point victory. It marked Avondale’s first loss of the season.

Kyle Sroka connected on a 25-yard field goal and Henry Paul added a 44-yard run, as Avondale (3-1, 2-1) built a 9-0 advantage.

Kyle MacLaughlin fought back with a 23-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 6-3 at the half. Eric Ellis tied the game with a 1-yard plunge and put Ferndale in the lead with a 22-yard sprint in the third quarter for the Eagles (1-3, 1-3).

After Avondale answered the bell when Eric Stubbs hauled in a 4-yard pass from Mitch Robinson, Ferndale’s Desmond Page collected a 6-yard scoring toss and MacLaughlin nailed the extra point to put Ferndale up for good at 23-16.

PONTIAC NOTRE DAME PREP 41, LIVONIA CLARENCEVILLE 0: Make it eight straight for Notre Dame Prep.

The Fighting Irish closed last season with four wins and have now opened up the 2011 campaign with four straight wins. This time Notre Dame Prep turned a 14-0 advantage into a route with a 28-0 second-quarter surge.

Shane Frakes and Jacob Romeo both scored two touchdowns, with Frakes running in from 7 and 45 yards, respectively, and Romeo scoring on runs of 35 and 25 yards. Max Spadafore added a 1-yard run and Danny Durkin a 19-yard sprint for the other two scores for the Irish (4-0).

HOLLY 18, FENTON 16: Blake Ordiway hit a 29-yard field goal in the fourth quarter in leading the Bronchos to the upset of Flint Metro League favorite Fenton, a team that reached the Division 2 regional finals last season.

Houston Shaw, who scored on runs of 15 and 18 yards, respectively, led 16-15 following Shaw’s second touchdown. The Tigers (3-1, 3-1) also recorded a safety in the second quarter.

Patrick Ordiway scored on a 33-yard run and Jimmy Duncan added a fumble recovery 85 yards for another score, where Johnny Williams converted the two-point conversion which put the Bronchos (2-2, 2-2) up 15-9 in the fourth quarter.

FARMINGTON HARRISON 34, OXFORD 7: Jake Vento scored on runs of 62, 6 and 42 yards to lead Division 2 top-ranked Harrison to the OAA White Division triumph.

After a scoreless first quarter, Harrison built a 21-7 advantage at the half and tacked on 13 more points in the fourth quarter. Defensively, the Hawks (4-0, 3-0) shut down Oxford standout running back Prescott Line.

Austin Hunter and Ed Huckelby added 2-yard runs each for the Hawks, while Brandon Buckner nailed 4-for-5 extra points for Harrison.

Anthony Cappuccilli scored on a 1-yard run for Oxford (2-2, 1-2).
