MONDAY’S SOFTBALL: Oxford opens with sweep of Berkley

OXFORD — Wins were hard to come by last spring for Oxford’s softball program. The Wildcats are trying to amend for a season of misfortune.

The first chapter of its hopeful comeback came Monday afternoon, where the Wildcats opened the season with a 14-5, 12-5 double-header sweep of visiting Berkley.

Kyla Kurczewski gained the win on the mound in the opener, giving up six hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Jessica Palumbo was 3-for-4 with six RBI, while Autumn Cervantez was 3-for-4 with two RBI and scored four runs.

Oxford grabbed a 4-1 lead through three innings, then tacked on three runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth to break the first game open.

The second game only went six innings before being called due to darkness.  Brkleyled 4-3 heading into the sixth inning before erupting for nine runs in the sixth.

Cervantez was 2-for-4 with a home run with two RBI, while Cassie Edgemon 2-for-3 with two triples and drove home three runs for the Wildcats (2-0).

Brooke Harris gained the win from the circle, striking out four, walking four, giving up three earned runs and scattering five hits for Oxford.
