2011 GIRLS TENNIS TEAM CAPSULES

Below are the girls tennis team capsules for schools in the www.northoaklandsports.com coverage area. Coaches can forward pertinent information about their team to results@northoaklandsports.com or to Senior Editor Dan Stickradt at dan.stickradt@northoaklandsports.com.

SWAT PATROL: Auburn Hills Avondale senior Mary Maguire returns to the No. 1 singles slot this season for the Yellowjackets, who hope to contend in the OAA Blue Division. File Photo.

SCHOOL: Auburn Hills Avondale

COACH: Michael Kopec, fourth season.

RECORD: 7-5, 6-2 OAA Blue Division (tied for third in final standings with Royal Oak).

LEAGUE MEET: Fourth at OAA-Blue meet (48 points).

REGIONAL: Eighth.

STATE: Did not qualify.

OTHER TOURNAMENTS: Avondale Quad (third); Romeo Invite (eighth).

SINGLES LINEUP: Mary Maguire, sr. (No. 1); Sara Goodnight, sr. (No. 2; played No. 1 doubles last season); Fallon Richie, jr. (No. 3; up from No. 4 last season); Nithan Abraham, jr. (No. 4; played No. 2 doubles last season).

DOUBLES LINEUP: Cristina Sonu, soph., Amy Swanson, soph., (No. 1); played No. 4 doubles last season); Sara Mulders, jr. (No. 2; played No. 4 singles last season); Nicole Hermiz, jr. (No. 2; new); Dani Anticuar, jr., Karen Nixon, jr. (No. 3); Abbey Nawrocki, jr., Alexandria Joo, soph. (No. 4).

KEY LOSSES: Renee Kuczeski (No. 2 singles); Varsha Koduvayer (No. 3 singles); Lauren Doucet (No. 1 doubles); Kathleen Blanchette, (No. 2 doubles).

NOTABLES: Avondale hopes to move up in the OAA-blue standings as a lot of the lineup returns and many of the teams ahead of the Yellowjackets lost key players to graduation or were  bumped up the OAA White Division; Avondale was 2-0 before the break.

SCHOOL: Clarkston

COACH: Becky Freeman, third season.

RECORD: 6-2-1, 5-1-1 OAA Red Division (second overall).

LEAGUE MEET: Second to Birmingham Seaholm.

REGIONAL: Third at Division 1 Rochester regional (21 points).

STATE: Seventh at Division 1 state finals (14 points).

SINGLES LINEUP: Gabrielle Spindler, jr. (league champ; regional runner-up; state quarterfinalist; 20-2); Lexy Baylis, fr. (No. 2); Kristina Lucas, sr.; (No. 3; state champ at No. 2 singles; league champion, regional runner-up; 21-1), Katie Brozovich, jr.; (No. 4; state runner-up at No. 3 singles; league, regional champ; 22-1).

DOUBLES LINEUP: Dana Olsen, fr. (No. 1); Paige Olsen fr. (No. 1); Abbey Hubregson, soph. (No. 2; played No. 4 singles last season); Amy Wasniak, jr.; Annie Tenkay, sr.; Allie Wilson, jr.; Olivia Dunn, jr. (new); Monique Zentner, soph.; Jordan Stuart, soph. (returnee); MacKenzie Bedor, soph.; Alainna Nido, jr.; Courtney Parkhill, sr.; doubles teams second through fifth flights still undecided.

NOTABLES: Coach Beckie Freeman has a problem most coaches don’t, she has  more talented players than roster spots; this means that some all-state talent will be playing down the list and creates exception depth; the wolves are also ranked second in the state in the preseason and are not only going after just their second-ever top-five finish at the state meet in June, but are setting their sights on the top prize; Clarkston will have perhaps the state’s deepest singles lineup and with an improved doubles group, should be a factor in every tournament they enter this season.

SCHOOL: Lake Orion

COACH: Eric Bracciano, fourth season.

RECORD: 7-2, 6-1 OAA Blue Division.

LEAGUE MEET: Second at OAA-Blue tournament (63 points).

REGIONAL: Fifth at Division 1 Rochester regional (11points).

STATE: Did not qualify.

RETURNEES: Nicole VanRooyen, sr. (league semifinalist last season at No. 2 singles); Abigail Martin, sr. (league finalist at No. 1 doubles); Kelsey Lee, sr. (league semifinalist at No. 4 singles); Abby Ulewicz, jr. (played No. 3 doubles last season); Athena Anger, sr. (played No. 4 doubles last season).

NEWCOMERS: Hannah Young, jr.; Kate Gidell, sr.; Devynn Makidon, jr.; Shelby Corless, sr.; Nadia Minart, fr.; Agatha Pawlikowski, soph.; Amber Najjar, jr.; Amanda Leonard, jr.; Evelyn Ventola, sr.

KEY LOSSES: Kelsey Copper (league finalists, regional semifinalist at No. 1 singles); Rachel Porter (league runner-up at No. 2 singles); Lyndsey Jackson (No. 1 doubles); Abigail Martin (No. 2 doubles).

NOTABLES: The Dragons may face a rebuilding campaign after one of their better years with the departure of seven varsity starters from a year ago and only five returnees; Lake Orion is still joggling its lineup to come up with the most competitive

SCHOOL: Rochester

COACH: Jerry Murphy, eighth season.

RECORD: 5-3-2, 5-1-1 OAA White Division (second).

LEAGUE MEET: Second at OAA-White (45 points).

REGIONAL: Second at Rochester regional (22 points).

STATE: 12th at Division 1 state finals (nine points).

SINGLES LINEUP: Kelsey Dieters, sr. (No. 1; three-time all-stater, over 50 career wins; state semifinalist last season at 26-1); Brittany Baxter, sr. (No. 2; fourth-year starter at singles, 14-10 last season); Anna Parker, sr. (No. 3); Rachel Parker, soph.(No. 4;played doubles last season).

DOUBLES LINEUP: Julie Markiewicz, sr., Kelli Wetherhold, sr. (No. 1; played No. 2 last season); Jenn Chen, jr., Kate Berry, sr.(No. 2; Chen played  four singles, Berry No.1 doubles last season); Leah Evanson, sr., Kirsten Byszkowski, jr. (No. 3); Stephanie Von Buehren, soph., Stephanie Handley, jr. (No. 4); Ashley Jacobs, jr., Ally Kane, jr. (No. 5).

KEY LOSSES: Katie Leniczek (No. 1 doubles).

NOTABLES: Jerry Murphy, the veteran boys coach, took over the girls program a few years ago and has watched the Falcons make the state finals each of the past three seasons; this year’s group returns 10 players including Ohio State-bound Dieters, who has won close to 60 career matches with only three losses; the Falcons already claimed a 6-3 win over No. 4 Novi before spring break, so this could very well be a top-notch year for the Falcons, who count eight seniors on their 14-player roster.

SCHOOL: Rochester Adams

COACH: Greg Burks, 10th season.

RECORD: 6-7, 3-3 OAA White (fifth).

LEAGUE MEET: Sixth at OAA White (28 points).

REGIONAL: Fourth at Farmington regional (14 points).

STATE: 12th at Division 2 state finals (five points; all points came from Morin at No. 1 singles).

SINGLES LINEUP: Marla Seaver, fr. (No. 1); Victoria Morin, soph. (No. 2); Alex Martin, jr.; Kate Cenko, soph. (No 4).

DOUBLES LINEUP: Charlene Coutteau, jr. (No. 1); Cathie Wang, soph. (No. 1); rest of lineup is still very wide open.

KEY LOSSES: Anne Marie Morin (state champion in Division 2 at No. 1 singles; 66-22 career record; 19-3 last season); Sarah Muzio (No. 3 singles).

NOTABLES: Adams, which opens Tuesday against powerful Port Huron Northern, does not have a senior in its entire lineup; the Highlanders are now competing in the Division 1 for the state tournament for the first time in nearly a decade; the Highlanders Adams could still contend for a league championship in a wide-open OAA-White race that also features Troy Athens, Rochester Stoney Creek and Birmingham Groves; Adams lost three singles players and five doubles players to graduation and plays in one of the state’s toughest regionals that features state-ranked Clarkston, West Bloomfield and Rochester.

SCHOOL: Rochester Stoney Creek

COACH: Angela Trecola, second season.

RECORD: 5-2-1, 3-2-1 OAA White Division (sixth overall).

LEAGUE MEET: Seventh at OAA-White (26 points).

REGIONAL: Fourth at Division 1 Rochester regional (13 points).

STATE: Did not qualify.

SINGLES LINEUP: Angela Schoenhals, soph. (No. 1; league runner-up; regional semifinalists; played No. 2 last season); Alex Sekulovski, sr.; Shelby Stone, jr. (No. 3); KateFeeley, sr. (No. 4, new).

DOUBLES LINEUP: Monica Mancini, sr. (No. 1); Kristin Hinchman, sr. (No. 1); Rachel Cannon, soph. (No. 2); Amanda Freed, sr. (No. 2); Lauren Kuzdok, soph. (No. 3); Marianna Munaco, jr. (No. 3); Allie Bouza, sr. (No. 4); Emma Nagy, jr. (No. 4); Megan D’Arcy (No. 5); Emily Robertson, soph. (No. 4 or No. 5).

KEY LOSSES: Theresa Elder (No. 1 singles; league runner-up; regional semifinalist); Emily Eldridge (No. 1 doubles); Elizabeth Marcus (No. 2 doubles).

NOTABLES: There are nine returning players on the roster, so the Cougars are entertaining the thoughts of climbing in a wide open race in the OAA white Division this season; the Cougars due have a quality No. 1 singles player in Schoenhals, the fifth and final to play tennis at Stoney Creek, and some other talented players in the lineup; the difficulty for the Cougars in their regional, where state ranked Clarkston, West Bloomfield and Rochester are in, plus Rochester Adams has bumped up to D-1 for the postseason.

SCHOOL: Troy

COACH: Eric Sturgis, first season.

RECORD: 2-2-5, 1-1-5, (tied for third overall in final league standings).

LEAGUE MEET: Second at OAA Red Division

REGIONAL: Second at Division 1 Grosse Pointe South regional (22 points).

STATE: Sixth at Division 1 state finals (15 points).

SINGLES LINEUP: Kelly Foreman, sr. (No. 1); Lexi Faber, jr. (No. 3); Surthi Chandra, jr.; Kadie Forshe, fr. (No. 4).

DOUBLES LINEUP: Alison Li, jr (No. 1; played No. 1 doubles last season); Amanda Guo, fr. (No. 1); Kara Collins, sr. (No. 2); Hope Keating, jr. (No. 2); Tonya Malayarenko, jr. (No. 3); Kalie Collins, soph. (No. 3); Morgan Zander jr. (No. 4); Lilian Liand, fr. (No. 4).

KEY LOSSES: Kate Campian (No. 1 doubles; all-area); Allison Chen (No. 2 doubles; all-area); Monica Shah (No. 2 doubles; all-area); Courtney Dubay (No. 3 doubles; all-area; state semifinalist; 22-1); Saarika Ketkur (No. 3 doubles; all-area; state semifinalist; 22-1).

NOTABLES: The perennial powerful Colts graduated five of their eight doubles players, so they will need to reload with new prospects if they are to remain in the top half of the league and make a return march to the state finals; this team has a tadtion of qualifying for the state meet and will head east for its regional to face Grosse Pointe South and Troy Athens, which will likely give them a solid chance to make the cut; Troy is not a front-runner in the ever-tough OAA-Red this season, but by no means is this squad a pushover in the state’s premier tennis league; expect the Colts to battle and use its young but quality doubles lineup to score points; Colts already tied state power Port Huron Northern 4-4 before spring break.

SCHOOL: Troy Athens

COACH: Andrew Shipp

RECORD: 4-8, 3-3 OAA White Division (fourth).

LEAGUE MEET: Fourth at OAA White (34 points).

REGIONAL: Third at Grosse Pointe North regional (19 points).

STATE: 24th at Division 1 state finals (no points).

SINGLES LINEUP: Shannon Wen, sr. (No. 1); Nina  Lu, sr. (No. 2); Michelle Hwang, sr. (No. 3).

DOUBLES LINEUP: Brenda Wu, sr. (No. 1); rest of doubles lineup undecided.

KEY LOSSES: Stella Lo (No. 1 doubles).

NOTABLES: The Red Hawks have eight seniors in the lineup, which is still being shuffled around, and they hope to gain a repeat berth to the state finals and improve upon the 24th-place finish; with North Farmington and Rochester now up in the OAA-Red Division, Athens could very well be a contender with its experienced lineup.

SCHOOL: Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes-Clarkston Everest Collegiate Unified.

COACH:

RECORD:

LEAGUE MEET: Seventh at CHSL league meet (four points).

REGIONAL:

STATE: Did not qualify.
