SOFTBALL TEAM CAPSULES 2012
Below are the prep softball team capsules for schools located in the www.northoaklandsports.com coverage area. Capsules compiled by Dan Stickradt. Wishing to have your team’s information published in this space, forward pertinent information to results@northoaklandsports.com or dan.stickradt@northoaklandsports.com
Auburn Hills Avondale
HEAD COACH: Gary Harlan, first season.
2011 RECORD: 15-15, 4-6 OAA White Division (fourth).
2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district semifinals to Waterford Kettering (11-2).
RETURNING STARTERS: Brianna Marzolf, sr. C (two-time All-OAA); Christine Wojtowicz, sr. 3B; Eva Hudak, jr. 2B.
KEY NEWCOMERS: Ali Anticuar, sr. OF; Nicky Kartsonas, sr. 1B.
KEY LOSSES: Graduated six starters; Katie Tullock, 1B; Cady Zimmerman, OF; Sami Bolton, 3B; Sarah Pink, OF; Kirsten Moy, P (All-League).
NOTABLES: With veteran coach Lisa Allain stepping down temporarily due to an injury, JV coach Gary Harlan bumps up to the varsity ranks for the remainder of the season. On the field, the Yellowjackets are two years removed from a league championship and appear ready for a rebuilding year as back-to-back large graduating classes have left Avondale with little varsity experience.
Auburn Hills Oakland Christian
HEAD COACH: Kyle Yee, second season.
2011 RECORD: 15-9, 4-4 MIAC-Red Division (third).
2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 4 district finals to Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes (10-0).
RETURNING STARTERS: Caity Couch, sr. CF (leadoff hitter; had an OB percentage of .790; All-Conference Second Team); Kim Ervin, sr. SS (fielding percentage .940, All-conference First Team); Jenna Bottiaus, sr. 2B; Alexis Fantin, sr. LF; Heather Geer, sr. U/DH; Becky VanSloten, jr. 1B (slugging pct. over .600; All-Conference Second Team); Alex Kline, soph. 3B (led team in RBI last season).
OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Melanie Couch, soph. 2B.
KEY NEWCOMERS: Kayla Tison, fr. P; Anna Livy Mullally, fr. P;Sharon Patterson, soph. C; Jamon Patterson, soph. LF; Fran Golus, soph. RF; Reagan Elrod, soph. OF-INF.
KEY LOSSES: Rachel Hole, C (All-Conference First Team); Amy Libka, sr. P (All-Conference First Team; not playing this season); Jenna Cantu, sr. OF (injured; out for year).
NOTABLES: With the loss of the main battery of the team in Amy Libka and Rachel Hole, Oakland Christian will be relying on freshman pitchers Anna Mullally and Kayla Tison with newcomer sophomore Sharon Patterson as the new catcher. The infield of the team remains intact from last year and will be counting on their experience and leadership for the season. It should be interesting where Oakland Christian falls into the MIAC equation. Four years ago, they had to cancel their program for one season due to low numbers and the Lancers are slowly climbing back from that misfortune.
Auburn Hills Christian Academy
HEAD COACH:
2011 RECORD:
2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Forfeited Division 4 district semifinals game against Auburn Hills Oakland Christian.
RETURNING STARTERS:
OTHER KEY RETURNEES:

NOTABLES:
Clarkston
HEAD COACH: Don Peters, eighth season.
2011 RECORD: 28-8, 6-4 OAA Red Division (third).
2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district semifinals to Waterford Kettering (6-2).
RETURNING STARTERS: Sydney Hasselbach, jr. C-SS-2B; Megan Hastings, sr. P-2B; Tara Perry, sr. OF; Rachel Pytel, sr.; Shauna Siwicki, sr. P-INF.
OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Rachel Allie, soph. OF; Alyssa Armstrong, jr.; Brenna Cooper, jr.; Katie Nelson, jr.; Makenzie King, soph.; Sam Hoekksema, soph. P. (injured; out for year).
KEY NEWCOMERS: Rachel Vieira, fr.; Madeline Maday, fr.; Candace Kitchen, fr.; Mikayla Blaska, fr.; Victoria Sharkey, fr.; Alex Favazza, fr.
KEY LOSSES: Allie Reeves, OF (Tiffin University); Sarah Altene, P-OF (Macomb Community College); Liz Zezula, OF (Milwaukee School of Engineering).
NOTABLES: The always-potent Wolves have run into some bad luck the past two years in the postseason, being upset in the districts the past two seasons. Clarkston returns a bulk of its talent, but must replace two of its key pitchers, one to graduation and one to injury. A crew of six freshmen should help make an impact this season all over the field and hope to return Clarkston to the state’s elite.
Holly
HEAD COACH: Jaimie Jones
2011 RECORD:
2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district semifinals to Milford (10-0).
RETURNING STARTERS:
OTHER KEY RETURNEES:

KEY LOSSES:
NOTABLES:
Lake Orion
HEAD COACH: Joe Woityra, fourth season.
2011 RECORD: 27-9-1, 6-3-1 OAA Red Division (second).
2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district finals to Romeo (10-1).
RETURNING STARTERS:Brianna Schwarcz, jr. 2B (All-League, All-District, All-State First Team; BA: 459 34 RBI, 29 runs, .467 OBA, .953 fielding pct.; third-year starter); Jessica Lucas, jr. OF (All-League, All-District, All-Region; .495 avg., 33 runs, .531 OBA, .964 fielding pct.; one error); Kaitlin Kogut, sr. P (15-4, 2.24 ERA); Danielle Guldi, jr. 3B (All-League, All-District; .414 avg., .922 fielding pct.; third-year starter); Alicia Gronowski, jr. P-SS.
OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Katlyn Clouse, sr. C-OF; Taylor Dillon, sr. OF; Sierra Woods, jr. 1B; Hayley Gilbertson, jr. OF; Jennifer Warznie, soph. OF.
KEY NEWCOMERS: Rachel Dolland, fr. INF; Hannah Hamay, fr. C-SS; Liz Carpenter, fr. OF; Kersten Thomas, soph. OF; Alyssa Geis, soph. P; Kelly Knobloch, soph. OF.
KEY LOSSES: Sandra Rippon, P (Trine University; hurt half of last season); Paige Hamay, 1B; Emily Pillivant, C.
NOTABLES: Lake Orion came on strong last season, but one disastrous outing in the districts ended the season against Romeo. The Dragons could be one of the better teams in the OAA-Red if it can find some consistent pitching. There is plenty of pop in the Dragons’ lineup with the return of six starters and 10 total players. Lake Orion has been knocking on the door for a league and district title the past couple of years and now must try to put it all together down the stretch this season.
Ortonville Brandon
HEAD COACH: Kristin Martin, fourth season.
2011 RECORD: 16-15, 8-8 Flint Metro League (fifth).
2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district finals to Lapeer West (4-2).
RETURNING STARTERS: Kristine Jones, sr. CG (fourth-year starter); Amy Szedlak: sr. C (fourth-year starter; signed to go to Macomb Community College); Hunter Mateer, soph. LF; Rae Beadlescomb, jr. SS.
OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Christina Mihalick, sr. P; Breanna Lauinger, sr. U.
KEY NEWCOMERS: Miranda Zimmerman, soph. LF; Genna Oertel, soph. RF;
Katey Hendershott, fr. P (No. 1 pitcher); Megan Genslak, fr. 3B-C.
KEY LOSSES: Hayley Phelps, P; Chelsea McCanham, 2B; Jaelyn Brady, 3B; Bree Kremer, SS.
NOTABLES: After finishing in the middle of the pack of the FML last season, Brandon would love nothing more than to return to the league title hunt and challenge for a district championship. The Blackhawks count a pair of fourth-year starters among their six returnees, but welcome a strong freshman class led by Hendershott, who is coming off an all-league basketball campaign.
Oxford
HEAD COACH: Kristi McDevitt, fourth season.
2011 RECORD: 8-22, 2-8 OAA Red Division (fifth).
2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district semifinals to Romeo (9-0).
RETURNING STARTERS: Cassie Edgemon, sr.3B (All-League; fourth-year starter; college recruit); Amanda Boyer, sr. 1B (third-year varsity player); Autumn Cervantez, jr. SS (verbally committed to Division I North Dakota State; All-League); Alyson Edgemon, soph. 2B; Kyla Kurczewski, soph. P-OF (No. 1 pitcher).
OTHER RETURNEES:Â Sierrah Macocha, sr. RF; Jennifer Fifield, sr. LF; Alexis Straub, jr. 1B-RF.
KEY NEWCOMERS: Skye Donaldson, fr. OF; Cherilyn Banas, fr. LF; Jessica Palumbo, jr. C (transfer from Arizona); Brooke Harris, jr. P (transfer from Ohio);
KEY LOSSES: Alyssa Hurtado, CF.
NOTABLES: Oxford had its fair share of struggles last season throughout a rebuilding campaign, but figure to be much more competitive thanks to two transfers and two freshman which allow the Wildcats to shuffle some players back to their natural positions and add some depth. If Oxford can get better pitching this season, they should alone win more games. With Cervantez back in the middle of the infield, this gives Oxford some better defense and the team now has improved its pitching with two reliable arms.
Pontiac
HEAD COACH:
2011 RECORD: 6-15, 4-8 OAA Gold Division (fourth).
2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district semifinals to Waterford Kettering (18-0).
RETURNING STARTERS:
OTHER KEY RETURNEES:
KEY NEWCOMERS:
KEY LOSSES:
NOTABLES:
Pontiac Academy of Excellence
NOTABLES: Cancelled program for 2012.
Pontiac Notre Dame Prep
HEAD COACH: Betty Wroubel
2011 RECORD: 20-20, 11-9 CHSL Central Division (third).
2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: District champions; lost in Division 2 regional finals to Armada (10-0).
RETURNING STARTERS: Carly Joseph, jr. P (All-League Honorable Mention, All-District, All-Region; won 19 games with 2.16 ERA; hit .315 with 21 RBI); Gabby Fazio, sr. C (All-county Honorable Mention; All-League; committed to Alma; threw out 12 runners last year; scored 33 runs with 25 RBI last season); Erin Collins, sr. SS/2B (All-District, All-Region; will be competitive cheerleader in college); hit .400 with .421BA with runners in scoring position); Courtney Wroubel, sr. OF-1B (All-County Second Team; All-District, All-League, signed with Oakland University; hit .454 with a .576 OBA; 19-for-19 on stolen bases scored 39 runs with 33 RBI); Olivia Daye, jr. 2B; Courtney Avromov, soph. OF-2B (All-District); Katy Roose, sr. 3B-SS-OF (All-county Second Team, All-district, All-Region, All-League; singed with Division II Gannon; hit .481 with six home runs and nine triples last season);
OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Rachel Dawson, jr. U; Cathy Robinson, sr. OF.
KEY NEWCOMERS: Frosh Danielle Deiotte, fr. P-U; Stephanie Mrowczynski, jr. OF (transfer from Rochester Stoney Creek).
KEY LOSSES: Stephanie Karlewski, OF (All-State); Amanda Bokshan, OF-SS-3B (four-year starter).
NOTABLES: The always tough Fighting Irish came on strong the second half of last season and made another run to the Division 3 Sweet 16. With seven returning starters, two key reserves and two key newcomers vying for regular time, there’s reason to believe that NDP will continue its strong tradition in softball.
Rochester
HEAD COACH: Laura Guzman, first season.
2011 RECORD: 15-13, 8-2 OAA White Division (second).
2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district semifinals to Troy (9-4).
RETURNING STARTERS: Maggie Irvine, sr.CF (All-League); Amanda Graham, sr. RF-P; Sarah Schedlbauer, jr. LF (All-League); Emily Ellis, jr. 3B-SS (All-League); Mackenzie Duff, jr.1B (All-League).
OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Emily Smith, soph. U-3B.
KEY NEWCOMERS: Alexa Haupt, soph. SS-2B; Maddie Williams, soph. U; Haley Klein, jr. 2B; Courtney Haupt, sr. C; Katie Swart, soph. 2B; Haley Lendermen, fr. P;Â Natalie Graham, jr. P.
KEY LOSSES: Carly Cribbs, SS-P; Martha Troy P.
NOTABLES: Guzman takes over for Rochester grad Jenny Morgan from the skipper’s position after serving as the junior varsity coach last season. There is talent on the roster, as there has been the past 5-6 years. Rochester must learn to be much more consistent. The question mark this season will be to see two new pitchers can adapt to the roles of logging most of the innings from the circle and keep the Falcons in games. If that happens, than this team, which returns four all-league players, should be able to challenge for a league title or more.
Rochester Adams
HEAD COACH: Fran Scislowicz, 25th season.
2011 RECORD: 26-12, 7-3 OAA White Division (third).
2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district opener to Lake Orion (5-1).
RETURNING STARTERS: Bre Polcyn, jr. LF-C (353 avg., 36 hits); Alexys Pacioni, sr. RF; Ashley Durand, sr. 2B (36 hits); Madeline Phelps, jr. SS (39 hits); Rebecca Camnaini, sr. CF (.388 avg.).
OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Alyse Wilson, sr. 2B; Rebecca Camiani, sr. RF; Molly McCain, jr. LF; Kristen Koltvedt, sr. P.
KEY NEWCOMERS: Kelly McCasland, fr P; there are seven sophomores up on varsity.
KEY LOSSES: Alex Bahner, C (All-League, All-Area); Claire Scislowicz, 1B; Emily Bryce, 3B (All-State, All-Area, All-League); Chloe Kauffman, CF (All-League); Melanie Kipke, P; Anna Loscko, OF.
NOTABLES: The Highlanders were hard hit by graduation, losing over half of its potent offense. There are five returning starters and four other returnees that hope to keep the Highlanders over the .500 mark. If Adams can find some reliable pitching, in particular from the arm of a freshman, than they should stay in the top half of the OAA White Division. This team is young, as seven sophomores and one freshman are vying for playing time.
Rochester Stoney Creek
HEAD COACH: Jerry Price, second season.
2011 RECORD: 14-15, 4-6 OAA Blue Division (fourth).
2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district semifinals to Lake Orion (12-2)
RETURNING STARTERS: Jessica Lie, sr. OF (All-League); Jen Semaan, soph. SS (All-League; .404 avg.); Kelsey Roseman, sr. OF; Karlee Bednarowski, jr. 2B-OF; Brittany Gadigian jr. 1B-P; Tiana Woloszyn, jr. P-3B (.439 avg.)
OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Hannah Aman, jr. OF-1B; Sam Herrick, jr. C-2B;
KEY NEWCOMERS: McKenzie Jump, jr. C-OF; Megan Sanger, jr. OF; Emily Garman fr. 3B-P; Sara Beyer, fr. P-C-INF-OF; Casey Cribbs, fr. C-INF.
KEY LOSSES: Adrian Saylor, jr. C (transferred); Stephanie Mrowczynski, jr. OF (transfer to Pontiac Notre Dame Prep).
NOTABLES: Stoney Creek dropped down to the OAA Blue Division last season in Price’s first campaign with the Cougars and they finished just one game below the five-hundred mark. With a bulk of the talent returning, perhaps the cougars can contend for a league title in their division and climb up into a respected opponent category. Stoney Creek has not had much success overall during its first nine seasons.
Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest
HEAD COACH: Jeff Ludwig, eighth season.
2011 RECORD: 17-11, 7-3 MIAC Blue Division (first).
2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 4 district semifinals to Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes (12-2).
RETURNING STARTERS: Stephanie Smith, sr.P-1B (All-State First Team two years ago; .505 avg., 39 RBI); Ashly Riethmeier, sr. 1B; (All-League First Team; .400 avg.; 34 RBI); Rachel Dober, jr. C (27 RBI); Marcella Bolen, sr. CF-P.
KEY LOSSES: Kirsten Thompson, sr. SS (All-MIAC, All-District, All-Region, All-Area, All-State First Team; Lake Superior State University); Rebecca Pierce, LF.
NOTABLES: The Crusaders have won six straight MIAC Blue Division titles and hope to make it seven in a row with five seniors in the starting lineup. Northwest would also like to break the district hex, as they have won just one district in the past seven years despite being a highly-talented team.
Troy
HEAD COACH: Tom Calnen, 19th season.
2011 RECORD: 24-11, 5-4-1 OAA Red Division (fourth).
2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: District and regional champions; lost to New Baltimore Anchor Bay in Division 1 state quarterfinals (9-6).
RETURNING STARTERS: Laney Hart, sr.2B (All-State Honorable Mention;Â .402 avg, 31 hits, 31 runs scored); Kamryn LaCarter, sr. SS-3B (hit .566, 46 hits, 27 for 28 in stolen bases); Kristen Shetler, sr. CF (standout defensive player; 400 BA, 38 hits, 33 RBI); Cori Mittelbrun, sr. 1B-P (.288 avg.); Jesse Pappas, jr. 1B-P (hit .289, 22 hits); Katy Krajenta, jr. P-3B (No. 1 starter from pitcher’s circle); Sally Muller , jr. OF (.301 avg., 22 hits).
KEY NEWCOMERS: There are five newcomers on a 16-player roster.
KEY LOSSES: Only lost two starters; Lynsey Mukomel, 1B (All-State);
NOTABLES: Troy took some lumps during last season, but found its groove in the postseason and eventually won district and regional championships and reached the Division 1 state quarterfinals for the fifth straight year. Most of this team is back, so Troy should be one of the better teams in the area. Is another magical postseason in store?
Troy Athens
HEAD COACH: Dave Marr, 36th season.
2011 RECORD: 18-18, 4-6 OAA White Division (fifth).
2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district opener to Utica (2-1).
RETURNING STARTERS: Melissa Palmer, sr. SS (All-League, All-District; fourth-year starter; signed with Western Michigan; hit .525, 36-for-37 on stolen bases, scored 52 runs); Haley Zemmer, soph. P (All-League).; Erica Siismets, jr.CF-P; Amanda Mildfelt, soph. LF; Meg Richter, sr. C; Lauren Genereau, soph. 1B; Jackie Klein, jr. 2B; Sarah Watson, soph. RF; Mary Grace Stark, soph. 3B; Kayla Rothenberg, sr. DH.
OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Maddie Rizzo, soph. OF.
KEY NEWCOMERS: Nancy Kast, soph. INF; Lauren Atwell, soph. OF.
KEY LOSSES: None.
NOTABLES: Athens may have as much potential as its has had in decades, with 12 returnees back, one of the state’s better players in Palmer, an ace pitcher in Zemmer and an eagerness to escape Troy’s shadow. If this team came pout it all together, they should be a serious threat to win the OAA-White and make a postseason run.
Troy Christian Leadership Academy

NOTABLES:
Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes-
Clarkston Everest Collegiate Unified
HEAD COACH: Steve Troy, fourth season.
2011 RECORD: 36-6, 10-0 CHSL-Intersectional Division (first); CHSL playoffs champion.
2011 STATE TOURNAMENT: District and regional champions; lost to Unionville-Sebewaing in Division 4 state quarterfinals (11-5).
RETURNING STARTERS: Abbigayle Kline, jr. P-OF (All-League, All-District); Amy Wolanin, sr. OF (All-District); Julie Mastromatteo, sr. C-SS (All-League, All-District)
OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Jessica Ebel, sr. OF; Angie Mastromatteo, soph. OF-2B;
KEY NEWCOMERS: Carly Bjanrnesen, sr. OF; Sarah Kowalczyk, soph. OF-P;
KEY LOSSES: Graduated 12 players; Michelle Cottrell, P; Farrah Nordman, 3B (All-League); Sarah Nuss, OF (All-League, All-State First Team); Hannah Garris, C-1B (All-Catholic, All-District); Abbie Troy, OF (All-Catholic, All-District); Lauren Robak, SS-1B.
NOTABLES: After graduating 12 players off of last year’s state quarterfinalist team, the Lakers won’t be particularly deep, but by no means is the cupboard bare. There is still plenty of holdover talent, mixed with some solid newcomers that could keep this team among the better Division 4 programs and definitely in the hunt in a loaded CHSL.
